The RAV4 Hybrid is equipped with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine assisted by two electric motors, producing a total of 219 horsepower. All-wheel drive is standard, with one of the electric motors powering the rear wheels and the other and the gasoline engine powering the fronts, as well as a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). The RAV4 Hybrid is not only more efficient than the standard model, but it is also faster.

The RAV4 Prime plug-in hybrid's electrons are stored in an 18.1-kWh battery pack, and the EPA rates its electric-only driving range at 42 miles. We were able to drive for 32 miles on electricity alone in our testing, but that was on the highway; we would expect a longer driving range in the city. On the Prime XSE, a 3.3-kWh onboard charger is standard, and a 6.6-kWh charger is optional; charging time on a 240-volt outlet is reduced to 2.5 hours. If only a 120-volt outlet is available, charging times will be approximately 12 hours.
